Summer travel doesn’t mean going to the other side of the world; if you’re looking to get away this coming year but don’t want to spend all your time travelling, why not check out some of the great European excursions on offer. These are some of our favourites for a summer holiday in 2011.

Spain

With incredible beaches all over, such as the coast of Cadiz, and an amazingly picturesque countryside to explore, Spain is always going to be a top choice for summer holidays. For kids there’s the guarantee of things to do, with all resorts offering an array of activities, especially water sports. For couples try a wine tour of Andalucía, or sample the tapas and the atmosphere in Huelva city’s late-opening cafes.

Greece

The sun alone makes Greece a firm favourite with lots of summer holiday-goers. With many pristine, blue-flag beaches and a more relaxed beach holiday vibe, it’s a great choice for a quick getaway. There’s so much history in Greece too, and a rich culinary culture that’s present in all of the food there. Greece holidays are hard to beat!

Portugal

The summer festivals in Portugal are a big pull for tourists. Get in on the carnival atmosphere with a summer holiday in Lisbon, or head to the coast for some brilliant sun. With a great mix of tourist friendly activities and a thriving nightlife scene, Portugal is a favourite for families and partygoers alike.

Sicily

Famous for its high-class food and drink, but also with some amazing beaches, Sicily is a summer holiday destination for people that want to get away from it all without being amongst the crowds. It’s got all the charm and vibrancy of Italy, and is tourist-friendly too, but you’ll find it less busy than some of Italy’s hotspots, even at the height of summer.

The Czech Republic

Less well known, but a real tourist treat, a summer holiday in the Czech Republic can mean staying in castles, exploring the medieval streets of the capital of Prague and treating yourself to some really cheap but high-class food and drink. It’s a real summer holiday hidden gem.
